Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of access
Lawrence, Kansas | June 2022 | Exhibition
The 2021–2022 intern cohort at the Spencer Museum of Art collaborated on an exhibition in the Brosseau Learning Center. This project was intern-led and designed, from selecting art, to research and label writing, to installation.
Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Access explores the extensive concept of access and includes five themes: access to space, access to healthcare, access to economic opportunity, access to personal history, and access to the environment. Works on view include art by contemporary artists such as Carrie Mae Weems, Philip Heying, and Alexandra Bell, international artists such as Ganzeer and August Sander, and KU professors and alumni such as Norman Akers, Yoonmi Nam, and Roger Shimomura.
In the creation of this exhibition, interns from various departments across the museum came together to conceptualize, plan, design, and install this exhibition. As a team we also planned events including an opening and closing reception as well as talks.
As the communications intern, I took on the responsibility of editing all labels including those for section themes and individual artworks. I wrote several myself including the label for Enjoy AZT (ACT UP) pictured above. I played a large role in planning and coordinating intern meetings both in person and virtual. I assisted in the development of the virtual exhibition furthering my knowledge of web design and promoted the associated events.
